Purpose and scope
- To manage a caseload of clients with complex needs and with a diagnosis of spinal cord injury (SCI) and other medical diagnosis including neurological, orthopaedic and complex conditions.
- To use evidence based/ client centred principles underpinned by theoretical knowledge to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- To work as part of the multi / interdisciplinary team providing specialist rehabilitation.
- To be specialist in rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.
- To provide clinical supervision and clinical specialist advice/support to the physiotherapy team and other team members as appropriate.
- To participate in the planning, development and education of Physiotherapy services, holding responsibility for defined projects.
- To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Physiotherapy Service.
- To independently manage a designated caseload of clients with highly complex needs and mixed diagnosis.
- To ensure that all referrals to the inpatient/outpatient Physiotherapy rehabilitation team are prioritised and allocated appropriately.
- To provide specialist Physiotherapy assessment and treatment to inpatient/outpatient caseload and continuously re-assess caseloads.
- To work as an autonomous practitioner evidencing high levels of problem solving (solution orientated), clinical reasoning and independence of judgement as appropriate.
- To work with clients, their carers/ relatives to identify goals as part of the overall care plan and participate as in joint goal setting and rehabilitation planning with other team members.
- To plan and carry out regular goal review with the patient/family/carers to discuss progress and plan future goals.
- To plan, prioritize and implement client centred individual and/or group interventions.
- To work as part of the multi/interdisciplinary team providing specialist information.
- To conduct and develop rehabilitation groups, working with other members of the multi interdisciplinary team.
- To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention and to ensure a high standard of evidence based clinical and professional practice is maintained and developed and intervention progress to a satisfactory closure.
- To provide physiotherapy intervention/s at The Hospital, the patient’s home or other community setting and manage the risks associated with this.
- To comply with organisational policies relating to equal opportunities, Data Protection and Health and Safety at Work legislation, taking responsibility to attend mandatory training as necessary.
- To adhere to the dress code and local practices of the Physiotherapy Department and The Hospital.
Leadership Supervision & Appraisal
- To actively participate in supervision and appraisal using reflection and analysis to inform practice and identify training needs.
- Personal Development Review is used in the organisation and is an integrated part of the development for the individual. All staff are expected to take an active part in regular performance reviews.
- To carry out appraisals and perform reviews with members of the physiotherapy team as necessary.
- To provide effective guidance, supervision and appraisals for junior staff.
- To attend appraisal and supervision sessions, in-service training programs and staff meetings.
- To be conversant and take lead ensuring all physiotherapy staff comply with local policies and procedures.
Training staff and students
- To act as a clinical educator to students on placement.
- To promote best practice in Spinal Cord Injury physiotherapy to other therapists and across the organisation acting as a resource for training and specialist advice.
- To keep up to date with current theory and practice in the field of rehabilitation and ensure that the treatment offered is based on best clinical practices, guidelines and research.
- To provide support, guidance, teaching and clinical supervision to physiotherapists and to rehabilitation assistants involved in the physiotherapy programmes to ensure high standards to intervention and health & safety are maintained at all times.
- To prioritise and delegate appropriate case load to physiotherapy assistant providing appropriate supervision.
- To provide training in the use of standardised and non-standardised assessments used in spinal cord injury to members of the therapy team.
- To provide training and use of treatment techniques currently used in spinal cord injury.
- To provide advice and guidelines via supervision, training or joint sessions to members of the therapy team with complex cases.
- To assist in the induction and training of new and existing staff from immediate team and other disciplines.
Service development & delivery
- To develop the spinal cord injury physiotherapy service in line with recommended guidelines/standards of practice to ensure physiotherapy practice is evidence based in conjunction with the lead physiotherapist and other heads of service.
- To deliver high standard of treatment using latest exoskeleton technologies – Ekso GT Bionics and Indego exoskeleton.
- To identify areas of service development in conjunction with the Lead Physiotherapist and take a lead in implementing these.
- To undertake any other appropriate additional duties as required by the Lead Physiotherapist or Therapy Service manager.
- To assist in the recruitment and selection of physiotherapy staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
- To assist in the ongoing development with future strategic planning of neurological and spinal injury rehabilitation services with The Hospital and any associated stakeholders.
- To ensure service is delivered in line with professional guidelines & department procedures. i.e. biohazards, animals, bodily fluids, moving hand handling, verbal and all other risks associated with personal safety.
- To participate in weekend, bank holiday cover and on-call as required.
- To act as a key worker for all designated patients on your workload.
- To lead and co-ordinate case conferences and family meetings.
- To participate/oversee the discharge planning process within the physiotherapy service and carry out home visits in partnership with designated team members and associated health care professionals, in order to ensure smooth and safe transition for the patient back into the community.
- To participate in clinical meetings which review individual patient process.
- To provide help and advice to patients, their families and other careers, teaching and demonstrating relevant treatment techniques, moving and handling and use of equipment to optimise patient functional ability and independence.
- To refer clients onto other agencies as appropriate.
- To ensure that patients are informed of the current procedure regarding purchase of equipment and make decisions based on informed consent.
- To communicate effectively with staff members, patients and relatives and all involved in patient’s care.
- To use communication skills of problem solving, reasoning and negotiation to establish a therapeutic relationship in complex cases. This will involve managing barriers to communication i.e. cultural, physical cognitive and emotional.
- To give and receive complex and sensitive information about staff and patients which might involve information about poor prognosis or long disabilities.
- To support and maintain open channels of communication at all times with the Rehabilitation and Therapy Service Manager, members of the Therapy Department and multi-disciplinary team.
- To promote awareness of the role of the physiotherapy within the multi-disciplinary team, negotiating priorities where appropriate.
- To attend multi-disciplinary meetings and feedback where appropriate.
- To promote the role of Physiotherapy and the service of The Hospital to visitors, case managers, solicitors and the wider community and potential service users.
- To have a practical knowledge of information technology skills and date inputting.
- To use an electronic system for an outpatients SOAP notes writing.
- Use the shared computer drive to timetable all physiotherapy sessions including goal meetings if appointed as key worker.
- Maintain confidentiality and conforming to the data protection act as required.
- To record all physiotherapy intervention in compliance with departmental guidelines, organisational policies and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and hospital standards and guidelines.
- To keep accurate statistics of activity as required.
- To provide written reports with future recommendations as appropriate.
- Use the shared computer drive to complete relevant sections off assessment and discharge reports, facilitating this process as Key Worker where appointed.
- To adhere to organisational policies and apply the code of ethics and professional conduct for Physiotherapists (chartered Society of Physiotherapy0, to ensure safe practice.
- To maintain professional competence to practice, developing professional skills and maintaining a portfolio ,containing evidence of continuing Professional Development as required by the Health Professions Council (HPC)
Training and Development
- To undertake and participate in any development training or staff meetings as required by the Registered Manager or applicable legislation, for example the Health and Social Care Act, Health and Safety at Work Act etc.
- Participate in relevant training as and when required, and be committed to your personal and professional development
- To ensure you are aware and understand all statutory and Company policies and procedures and adhere to them at all times
Health and Safety
- To maintain at all times the Health and Safety of patients, visitors, and colleagues in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Emergency Fire Procedures
- Report to the Registered Manager any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment, or any potential hazard
- Promote Safe Working Practices within the Hospital
- Promote and maintain the good reputation of the Hospital
- Ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of your duties is not divulged to third parties
- To assist with any other related duties as required by the Company
